Horse Hair Ceramics makes a beautiful, unique, one of a kind gift. Perfect for any occasion or for the horse lover in your life.

Horse Hair Pottery dates back 1200 years and is credited to the Navajo. Some believe its origin was an accident when an Indian’s hair had been blown by the wind and attached itself to an item that had just come out of the firing pit. The Indians liked the effect and began applying hairs from their horse to the pieces to create beautiful art.

Today our techniques are a little different and more modern and sometimes we even incorporate feathers with the horse hair on select pieces creating yet another unigue effect.

Each piece is its own original masterpiece ...due to the random patterns and markings it can never be reproduced, giving you a very unique, one of a kind piece of art.

Once the kiln temperature has reached 1200 to 1600 degrees, one by one the pieces are removed and strands of horse mane and tail hair are applied. There is only about 60 seconds to place the horse hair on the pottery. The hair starts to vaporize on the surface, squiggling and dancing around on the piece leaving behind the brown/black carbon lines.
The thickness of the horse hair determines the carbon markings.
Tail hair leaves a thicker line and the mane hair leaves a thinner more delicate line.
